Common Eye Injuries

Small foreign objects, like hair or dust, often enter the eyes. They are usually flushed naturally by the eye’s tears or blinking, but sometimes they can become stuck or damage the cornea. A scratch on the cornea can leave a feeling in the eye like something is still there, so be sure to call us if you have this feeling. You may need antibiotics to prevent infection.

Large or sharp foreign bodies, like metal or glass, or debris thrown at high speeds, can cause significant damage to the cornea. If they become embedded in your eye, they will need to be removed by a trained professional.

Chemical injuries can occur when harmful chemicals enter or make contact with your eye. These injuries can happen either at work or at home.

Trauma is generally caused by blunt force to the eye or face and can lead to bruising around the eye (black eye) or swelling.

Blunt trauma can happen for a variety of reasons. If you or a loved one have sustained an injury to the eye or face, it’s important to seek immediate medical attention. Even if an injury appears mild, serious damage can occur from pressure caused by swelling of the eyelid and ocular tissue.
